Markus Diethelm named as Credit Suisse group general counsel

Credit Suisse has appointed Markus Diethelm (pictured) as its new group general counsel, effective 01 July 2022. He will join the Executive Board and report directly to Credit Suisse Group CEO Thomas Gottstein. Diethelm will be succeeding Credit Suisse long time top lawyer Romeo Cerutti, who has resigned from his role after 10 years with the bank.

Diethelm is to join Credit Suisse from UBS Group where he most recently served as group general counsel and member of the executive board, a role he has held since 2008. Prior to that, he was group chief legal officer at Swiss Re for a decade. Earlier in his career Diethelm practiced law in various law firms in the USA such as Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, Shearman & Sterling and Paul as well as Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.

The appointment of Diethelm was one of several appointments to the Executive Board and management changes made by Credit Suisse. The positions of Chief Financial Officer, CEO of the EMEA region and CEO of the APAC region will be filled.

David Mathers, who has been CFO since 2010 and CEO of Credit Suisse International (CSI) since 2016, will leave the bank. He will remain with the bank until the appropriate successors for both functions are found.

Francesca McDonagh named CEO of the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region from 1 October 2022. She will take over from Francesco De Ferrari, CEO of the Wealth Management Division, who has held this position as interim since January 2022.

Edwin Low named CEO of the Asia Pacific (APAC) region as of June 1, 2022. Low is currently Co-Head Investment Banking APAC based in Singapore and acts as CEO for Southeast Asia. He will succeed Helman Sitohang as a member of the Executive Board.

Helman Sitohang will step down from his current position as CEO of the Asia Pacific (APAC) region as of June 1, 2022.  He will remain with Credit Suisse as senior advisor to the Group CEO, focusing on core clients and strategic development in the APAC region.
